Watershed Management Plan
Lake Maumelle was built in 1957-58 for the purpose of serving as a source for drinking water for Central Arkansas. That was a historic time for the lake—its creation.
Lake Maumelle now enters another time of equal historic significance—the implementation of a watershed management plan.
The Watershed Management Plan (WMP) serves as a guiding tool to determine how the land around Lake Maumelle will be developed and used. This is true also for the land around all the streams that feed into the lake. Most of the land is privately owned. The WMP will affect many land owners around the lake and everyone who uses water from the lake.
If the WMP is fully implemented, the people of Central Arkansas could have an outstanding natural resource for generations to come. If special interests are allowed to improperly influence the implementation of the plan, then the people of Central Arkansas could suffer the loss of an invaluable and high-quality resource. For this reason it is important to understand the WMP.
